My Busted Up Hyundai and My New Saturn

So here I am driving to work at 8:45 am down South Grand on the east side of town, minding my own business when out of fucking nowhere come two jackasses in a light Chevy Lumina pulling out from the sidestreet, Wheeler, into a Drive-in Liquor store. What two jackasses were doing at a Drive-in Liquor store at 8:45 am is beyond me. They were probably buying drugs as that place is rumored to sell more than just alcohol. I slam right into their side, on the backend by the bumper. They roll forward into the corner of the building and I fishtail into the parking lot.

I call 911 to report the accident, tell them no one was hurt, and they send two cops out to us. I then call my mom and dad to get them to come pick me up as my car was undrivable, and call Casey at work to let him know I'm going to be late. The cops get there, ask my store, check my ID, Registration, Insurance, etc. and then go talk to the driver of the other car. I overhear just a few words, him saying he's 19 and that he doesn't have his license on him. The cop goes back to his squad car, pulls out handcuffs, cuffs the kid, reads him his rights, and shoves him into the back of the other squad car. After about 10-15 minutes of the cop doing paperwork in his squadcar, he comes back out motioning the other cop to join him. Turns out the little bastard lied. He turns 16 in May, doesn't have a license (obviously) NOR does he even have a permit (not that it mattered, as the other kid was 15 as well). He also apparently lied about his name, and the fact that he he owned the car. The car was registered to some lady in Mason City (about 30-40 miles outside of Springfield). Thankfully she had insurance. Or so I thought.

We first call our insurance, but as we have liabilty only they won't do shit for us and tell us to call the lady's insurance. We do so, and are promptly told that she cancelled it in January. Lucky us. So we call back up our insurance company and they say they'll cover it under uninsured motorist and will sue the driver's family for their money or something. That is if they deem the accident was the kid's fault. In other words, we just have to fax them the police report. They check out my car on Wednesday and that evening declare it totalled. On thursday my Mom and Dad pick up the check for $950 ($1400, minus $200 for previous damages and $250 for the deductable). I can't believe my piece of shit was worth that much, or that they'd be willing to pay that much for it. They say they'll also reimburse us for the cost of transferring a title for a new car as well as that car's registration fees.

I do some searching on Ebay for a car, and then my mom finds out about a 1994 Saturn SL1 that the parents of a priest she works with (she works at a Catholic School) are selling for $1500. The only problem is that the windshield is cracked a bit. We check it out Tuesday night, just as insurance calls me to get my side of the story. I loved the car, it was in great shape aside from the crack, which wasn't really noticable unless you're looking for it. We take a quick test drive and decide that's the car I want.

On Wednesday I apply for a loan for $2000 to cover the cost of the car, a CD player, and the windshield. We also find out some more news on the Saturn. It's not a 1994, but a 1995, and it isn't going to cost $1500, but $1300 instead. Yay! My loan gets approved on Thursday, my dad co-signs for it, and they finish up the paperwork. Friday afternoon I drove to the credit union to sign my half of the papers and they hand me a check for $2000. I promptly deposit it and we setup a time with the owners of the Saturn to make the purchase.

We pick the car up at 3:30pm on Friday and then drive all over town trying to get the registration moved over to the new car and whatnot. We first go to the DMV, but unfortunately they don't do plates or registration anymore. They tell us to go to another place a few blocks away that closes at 4:30, 20 minutes from then. After getting all our paperwork filled out the lady takes one look at it and says that my MOM has to sign the title and registration as well, since she was co-owner of the hyundai. Since they were just closing we had 30 minutes to get to my mom, have her sign the paperwork, and then get to the north end of town to a place that closes at 5. By 6pm we have everything squared away.

I drive to Best Buy in my hot new wheels, purchase a new MP3 CD Player by Pioneer, and setup an appointment for an install at 2pm the next day (Saturday). On Saturday I drive it to work and as soon as I'm off go to Best Buy for the install. When it's done I drove home, washed, waxed, cleaned the inside, put on my window decals, and went to get my 1-Up mushroom antenna topper, which just happened to be missing. Fuck. Oh well, I'll try to get a new one. Anyway, here are the pictures. First are the pictures of my car and the damage dealt to it. Then are the pics of the damage done to the assholes' car. Lastly are the pics of my hot hot new Saturn.
